Not necessarily. If all you have is coffee powder (real ground beans, not instant coffee) and any mean for boiling water, you can still enjoy a pretty good cup. Just put a spoonful of coffee in a cup, pour freshly-boiled water (they have to be freshly-boiled, that is at a temperature of almost 100 degrees Celsius) and stir gently. The result is a strong, although not so aromatic coffee, known in some places as "black coffee" and in others as "Turkish coffee". It is not as subtle as real brewed coffee, but it will keep you awake for a minimal cost.
